Introspection

Some days are not my best days:
A raised voice, a cutting word,
A selfish choice,
A failure to give thanks.

If I am honest,
Others are more patient with my faults
Than I am with theirs
And God’s grace is a deep well
From which I daily must draw.

Prodigal God

Do I know God’s grace?
Do I understand His extravagant love?
Can I really fathom the lengths He has gone for me?
And how has that changed me?
Have I been the one who has selfishly sought his own way, demanding to be free?
Or am I the one taking pride in my own morality?
There is a different way.
Do I know God’s grace?
Do I understand His extravagant love?
Can I really fathom the lengths He has gone for me?
And how has that changed me?

On the Subject of Hair

I figured, why bother?
The lawn has faded, and some spots are bare
But I keep it trimmed and bordered with care
I could aerate and water and fertilize and weed
And every spring replenish with seed
To keep it thick and lush and green
But I figured, why bother?

Sometimes the Day Flies By

Sometimes the day flies by
I start out hoping to accomplish this or that
But I’m carried away by other tasks
A co-worker needs my help or advice
Or just wants to talk about a difficult choice
A server is down and emails fly
Calling for my immediate attention
A meeting is scheduled and decisions are made
Can I get that information by the end of the day?
There’s a message when I return
Are you aware, that no one is able to print over there?
I sit down to lunch to quiet my thoughts
But a knock at the door says
“Can you help me please?”
So I’m off to solve another problem
Only to return to my desk and wonder
Where was I?  Did I finish my lunch?
But I have research to do to write that report
And a script to write
And a contract to renew
And bills to pay
And items to order
This must be done today!
My inbox is full of messages demanding a response
The phone is flashing, but it will just have to wait
What’s that smell?  Oh no, it’s my leftover lunch.
But where has the time gone?
The clock says it’s late
Should I go or should I stay?
Sometimes the day flies by.
